About
Emmanuel Croset was born in Pretoria, South Africa and grew up in Hungary; France; Malta; China and South Africa. Emmanuel's photographs aim to question the essence of humanity within social structures that grant privilege to some and deny rights to others. His work tackles the way people navigate social and financial hierarchies; politics; religion and cultural practices. During his professional training at the Market Photo Workshop in Johannesburg, South Africa (2019) he honed his conceptual and technical skills in the arts of photojournalism and documentary photography. Emmanuel is currently working as a stringer at Agence France Presse (AFP). He has been published in The New York Times, The Guardian, The Washington Post, Aljazeera, Bloomberg, Le Monde, Internazionale, El Pais amongst other international publications. Emmanuel's freelance work has lead to collaborations with the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation, JournAfrica, Arte Reportage and Agence France Presse to uncover the environmental and humanitarian predicament surrounding the coal industry in South Africa. Emmanuel was chosen to take part in the Canon Student Development Programme in 2021, a bespoke education programme dedicated solely to students with a clear commitment to photography. With a focus on visual storytelling, the initiative provides admitted students from across EMEA with the exclusive opportunity to have their portfolio reviewed by some of the most influential names in the world of photography and receive advice on how to advance their careers. Emmanuel's interest in photojournalism came with the understanding of the power of a photograph. When faced with visual evidence of an event or emotion, the account is intimate and evokes a stronger sense of personal accountability. This breeds compassion, sorrow, joy, awe and more, bringing the audience a step closer to intercultural understanding and acceptance.
Emmanuel is currently based in Johannesburg.
